A leading higher education institution in the Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE) is seeking a qualified and motivated Food Science Instructor to join its academic team on a full-time basis. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching and coordinating undergraduate laboratory sessions across a broad range of Food Science and Food Technology courses.
This position is well suited to a Food Scientist, Food Technologist, Food Science Lecturer, Laboratory Instructor, or academic professional with strong practical laboratory experience and an interest in undergraduate education and applied food science research.
The Food Science Instructor will support students through practical, hands-on learning in areas including food chemistry, food analysis, food microbiology, food processing, food safety, sensory evaluation, quality control, and food product development. The role also includes supporting faculty-led research projects, maintaining laboratory standards, preparing practical sessions, managing laboratory resources, and ensuring compliance with health, safety, and quality requirements.
Job Responsibilities
Teaching and Food Science Laboratory Instruction
- Teach and supervise undergraduate laboratory sessions in Food Science and related Food Technology subjects.
- Conduct practical classes covering areas such as:

- Prepare laboratory experiments, practical demonstrations, teaching materials, laboratory manuals, standard operating procedures (SOPs), reagents, samples, and other instructional resources.
- Demonstrate appropriate laboratory techniques and explain analytical procedures clearly to undergraduate students.
- Train students in the safe and effective use of laboratory instruments, analytical equipment, and food-processing machinery.
- Supervise students during laboratory experiments and practical activities.
- Ensure students follow laboratory safety procedures, chemical-handling requirements, equipment operating instructions, and institutional health and safety policies.
- Monitor student laboratory work and provide appropriate academic and technical guidance.
- Evaluate laboratory reports, practical examinations, assignments, experiments, presentations, and other student assessments.
- Provide constructive feedback to help students improve their laboratory skills, scientific understanding, analytical techniques, and report-writing abilities.
- Assist faculty members with course coordination, curriculum development, learning-outcome assessment, accreditation requirements, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Research and Laboratory Support
- Participate in faculty-led and departmental research projects related to Food Science, Food Technology, food safety, food analysis, food processing, food chemistry, microbiology, quality assurance, or related disciplines.
- Assist with research planning, experimental preparation, sample collection and preparation, laboratory testing, data collection, and documentation.
- Conduct laboratory analyses using appropriate food science and analytical techniques.
- Assist with preliminary statistical analysis, interpretation of experimental results, and research data management.
- Maintain accurate laboratory records, experimental data, sample information, and research documentation.
- Support the operation, calibration, routine maintenance, and proper use of laboratory and research instruments.
- Identify equipment issues and report technical problems to the appropriate personnel.
- Contribute to research reports, technical documents, conference presentations, manuscripts, publications, and other scholarly activities when appropriate.
- Assist in supervising and training undergraduate students involved in research projects.
- Provide students with guidance on laboratory methods, experimental procedures, data recording, and scientific practices.
- Follow applicable requirements concerning research ethics, data integrity, biosafety, chemical handling, laboratory safety, and responsible research conduct.
Laboratory Management and Safety
- Ensure teaching laboratories are properly prepared and ready for practical classes.
- Maintain clean, organized, and safe laboratory workspaces.
- Prepare and arrange laboratory equipment, chemicals, reagents, samples, consumables, and other materials before practical sessions.
- Maintain laboratory inventories and monitor the availability of essential supplies.
- Assist with purchasing, receiving, storage, labeling, and safe disposal of laboratory materials.
- Ensure chemicals, biological materials, food samples, and other laboratory resources are handled and stored according to applicable safety procedures.
- Follow laboratory risk assessments, safety protocols, emergency procedures, and standard operating procedures.
- Assist with routine equipment maintenance, calibration, inspection, and servicing.
- Report damaged, malfunctioning, or unsafe equipment promptly.
- Maintain appropriate laboratory documentation, records, checklists, and operating procedures.
Academic and Departmental Responsibilities
- Work collaboratively with Food Science faculty members, laboratory technicians, technical staff, and other academic professionals.
- Participate in departmental meetings, committees, student activities, academic events, and outreach initiatives.
- Assist with student mentoring and academic support activities.
- Participate in professional development, technical training, workshops, seminars, and relevant academic activities.
- Contribute to curriculum improvement and the enhancement of practical Food Science education.
- Support departmental quality assurance and accreditation activities when required.
- Participate in community outreach and educational activities related to Food Science, Food Technology, food safety, nutrition, or related areas.
- Perform other academic, laboratory, research, and departmental responsibilities appropriate to the position.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Food Science, Food Technology, Food Chemistry, Food Microbiology, or a closely related discipline from a recognized university.
- Strong academic and practical knowledge of core Food Science subjects.
- Knowledge of undergraduate Food Science laboratory teaching and practical instruction.
- Ability to prepare, conduct, and supervise laboratory experiments.
- Understanding of laboratory safety procedures, quality assurance principles, and standard operating procedures.
- Familiarity with food analysis techniques and laboratory instrumentation.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Ability to explain scientific and technical concepts clearly to undergraduate students.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work effectively with students, faculty members, laboratory technicians, and multidisciplinary academic teams.
Preferred Qualifications
Candidates with the following qualifications and experience may be preferred:
- PhD in Food Science, Food Technology, Food Chemistry, Food Microbiology, or a related discipline.
- Previous experience teaching, demonstrating, or assisting with university-level Food Science laboratory courses.
- Experience in practical food analysis, food chemistry, food microbiology, food processing, sensory evaluation, food safety, quality control, or product development.
- Hands-on experience with analytical laboratory instruments used in Food Science and Food Technology.
- Experience operating or supervising the use of food-processing laboratory equipment.
- Previous involvement in academic or applied food science research.
- Experience with experimental design, laboratory data collection, statistical analysis, and scientific reporting.
- Experience contributing to research papers, conference presentations, technical reports, or scientific publications.
- Knowledge of laboratory quality management systems and quality assurance procedures.
- Understanding of chemical safety, biological safety, risk assessment, laboratory waste management, and equipment maintenance.
- Experience supervising undergraduate laboratory or research projects.
