Job Responsibilities – Junior Chemist – Laboratory (Oil & Hydrocarbon)

As a Junior Chemist, you will support laboratory operations related to oil, petroleum, and hydrocarbon testing while ensuring compliance with industry standards and internal quality procedures. Key responsibilities include:

  • Perform routine and non-routine chemical analysis of oil, petroleum products, lubricants, and hydrocarbon samples in accordance with approved test methods.
  • Assist in conducting laboratory tests such as density, viscosity, flash point, sulfur content, water content, distillation, and other physicochemical analyses.
  • Follow ASTM, ISO, API, and other relevant international testing standards accurately.
  • Prepare samples, reagents, and calibration solutions under supervision.

  • Operate and maintain laboratory instruments and equipment, ensuring proper handling and basic troubleshooting.
  • Accurately record test observations, calculations, and results in laboratory worksheets and laboratory information systems (LIMS).
  • Support senior chemists in method development, validation, and quality control activities.
  • Ensure compliance with laboratory safety procedures, chemical handling protocols, and environmental guidelines.
  • Junior Chemist – Laboratory maintains the cleanliness and organisation of the laboratory, including proper storage and labeling of chemicals and samples.
  • Participate in internal audits, proficiency testing, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Assist in preparing test reports and documentation as required by clients and management.

Job Qualifications – Junior Chemist – Laboratory

To be considered for this role, candidates should meet the following qualifications and skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Applied Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, or a related scientific discipline.
  • Minimum 1 year of laboratory experience is preferred, particularly in oil, petroleum, or hydrocarbon testing laboratories.
  • Basic knowledge of oil and petroleum testing methods, laboratory instruments, and analytical techniques.
  • Familiarity with ASTM, ISO, and API standards will be an added advantage.
  • Understanding of quality management systems such as ISO/IEC 17025 is highly desirable.
  • Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team-oriented laboratory environment.
  • Good communication skills for reporting results and coordinating with team members.
  • Willingness to learn, adapt, and grow within a fast-paced laboratory setting.
