Job Responsibilities

  • Microalgae Cultivation and System Monitoring:
    • Establish and maintain controlled cultures of microalgae suitable for integration with aquaponic systems.
    • Monitor algal growth parameters such as light intensity, pH, temperature, and nutrient levels to optimize biomass production.
    • Ensure consistent culture health by applying aseptic techniques and timely harvesting protocols.
  • Application of Cell Culture Techniques:
    • Perform sterile cell culture operations for algae, including inoculation, sub-culturing, and media preparation.
    • Troubleshoot contamination issues and modify culture conditions to enhance cell growth and metabolite production.
  • Bioactive Compound Extraction and Characterization:
    • Extract valuable bioactive compounds such as pigments, antioxidants, or antimicrobial agents from microalgal biomass using chemical or solvent-based methods.
    • Analyze these compounds using appropriate instruments like UV-Vis spectrophotometers or chromatography systems to determine composition and functionality.
  • Molecular Biology Analysis:
    • Isolate DNA and RNA from algal samples for genetic identification and characterization.
    • Conduct PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) to amplify genetic material and assist in species-level differentiation.
    • Analyze gel electrophoresis results to validate amplification and sequence integrity.
  • Biochemical and Nutritional Analysis:
    • Determine the biochemical profile of algal biomass including quantification of proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and essential minerals.
    • Use standardized assays (e.g., Kjeldahl, Soxhlet, spectrophotometry) and follow protocols for nutrient evaluation.
    • Interpret results to assess nutritional viability for aquaculture feed or human food applications.

  • Design and Execution of Feeding Trials:
    • Develop experimental protocols to test the effectiveness of algae-based feed in aquaponic systems.
    • Evaluate parameters such as fish growth performance, feed conversion ratios, and water quality during trials.
    • Collect and analyze data to determine the impact of algae-based interventions on aquaponic efficiency.
  • System Performance and Data Recording:
    • Monitor and log system metrics (e.g., ammonia, nitrate, dissolved oxygen) to assess aquaponic health.
    • Maintain meticulous records of experimental procedures, raw data, and observational notes in lab notebooks or digital logs.
  • Scientific Writing and Reporting:
    • Contribute to drafting research papers, reports, and grant proposals based on experimental findings.
    • Review scientific literature to support discussions and contextualize data within the research scope.
    • Collaborate with faculty on manuscript submissions to peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings.
